What is original pack dispensing?
Not every pharmacy automation system repackages medication. Original pack dispensing (OPD) robots do the opposite: they store medicines exactly as the manufacturer packaged them, then retrieve the correct box the moment a prescription is processed. There’s no repackaging step at all — the robot simply knows where every pack is and brings it to the counter.
This is a different approach to the pouch-packing systems we’ve covered elsewhere, like Tosho Xana, which strip medication out of its original packaging and reseal it into dated, patient-labelled pouches. Neither approach is universally “better” — which one suits a pharmacy best usually comes down to dispensing volume, the mix of repeat versus acute prescriptions, and how much backroom space is available.
How an original pack dispensing robot works day to day
- Barcode-tracked storage — every pack is scanned in and stored with a live record of its location, batch, and expiry date.
- Automatic stock rotation — the robot picks the pack closest to its expiry date first (FEFO — first-expired, first-out), which helps cut down on wasted stock.
- Instant retrieval — once a prescription is processed, the correct pack is delivered to the counter in seconds, without a member of staff searching shelves.
- Real-time inventory — because every pack is scanned in and out, stock counts stay accurate without a manual stocktake.
Why pharmacies choose original pack dispensing
The case for automation here isn’t just theoretical. A systematic review of automated drug dispensing systems found that automation substantially reduced dispensing and drug administration errors compared with manual processes, while also cutting the time staff spent on medication handling. For a pharmacy processing a high volume of repeat prescriptions, that combination of fewer errors and less manual handling adds up quickly.
Beyond accuracy, original pack dispensing also tends to improve space efficiency — dense robotic storage can hold considerably more stock than open shelving in the same footprint, which matters for pharmacies that are tight on backroom space but still need to carry a wide range of lines.

Is original pack dispensing right for you?
If your pharmacy handles a high volume of repeat prescriptions in original manufacturer packaging, an OPD robot is often the simpler fit — there’s no repackaging workflow to manage. If you’re dealing with more complex multi-dose or compliance packaging, a pouch-based system like Scriptlife or Tosho may suit better. Many pharmacies end up running both side by side, using each for the prescriptions it handles best.
